Tribute: The Society for the Protection and Care of Seniors would like to pay tribute to one of its founding members, Ron Cameron, who sadly died recently. Ron was a member of the first Health Watch group in Trail and has been an executive member of SPCS since it was formed. His caring attitude for all aspects of society was evident in his volunteering of time and talents to our group and the many others that he served. His intelligent concern, active helping and friendship, will be much missed.(1) CHANGE TO SOCIETY'S NAME
At the April 27, 2014 AGM the membership voted in favour of changing the name from Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Seniors to: SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION AND CARE OF SENIORS.
(2) PHONE SCAMS to be aware of:
a) -claiming to be grandchild or family member, maybe crying voice disguised because of having been in an accident...seeking immediate funds to assist ...mailed by postal money order or c/o Safeway, etc. Always ask them a personal quesation only your real relative would know the answer to. Once you know it is a hoax, play along as if you are following their requests; then once you've hanged up to "start" the money transfer [which you are NOT going to do] try to get in touch with actual named family member to verify that it is NOT them in need. If you delay, scammer will call you back and you need to get them to call back again, because the police will only trace a call if it has been placed 3 times. Once you have gotten three calls same day, then contact the police to have it traced in effort to stop these criminals.
b) If you get a local phone solicitations (to buy coupon book or fund concert for needy kids, etc)... ask them to mail the info to look at, then decide... check directly with local organization to ask if legitimate.
c) You may receive emails 'from' Shaw, or other utility, or BMO or any financial organization, or even from your email site e.g. Yahoo --- which in some way ask you to update (to avoid closure, or so no delay sending or getting emails, or because your account exceedes storage limit, or needs re-validating.) I personally received all of those plus a lengthy one saying I needed to update with "F-Secure Internet Security 2014" a new version of a better resource spam and viruses. I checked by phone with Shaw and it was also a spam! **NEVER GIVE YOUR EMAIL AND PASSWORD FOR ANY ACCOUNT --- phone to confirm first!
Never type in your password, or reply to these...if you have any doubts, phone the company/site direct and ask if legitimate.
Also, if you are phoned saying you have a problems with your "Windows' internet...IGNORE!
If claim to be Telus, offering you a free I phone, etc. ask them to call back in ten because you are busy...then you contact Telus and ask if they are offering a free whatever...
d) Another internet scam says it is from Revenue Canada and that you are entitled to a $146.00 refund. Or postal mail received saying you have over-sea's inheritance. Or you get a request to help someone move their money out of a third world country, etc.

(4) Seniors’ Advocate: The Office of the Seniors’ Advocate is holding a meeting in Castlegar on June 20th, at the Castlegar Community Complex from 10:00 am – 11:30 am in the Kootenay Room. A representative from her office would like to speak with seniors and those interested in seniors issues to get feedback to bring back to the Advocate. All welcome to attend. The address is 2101 6th Ave. While the Seniors’ Advocate’s office is touring the province they are limited to the amount of communities they can meet in, so it is hoped a few folks from each community along the way will attend.
